Mike Wood
Mike Wood was born in the City of York. Signs of his artistic flair were soon evident when he went with his parents to Quebec, Canada and began to draw and paint the abundant wildlife. At 8 years of age he won a poster competition depicting the Aluminium Company of Canada's township of Arvida, celebrating its 25th Anniversary. On returning to England, Michael won a scholarship to York Art College, whilst still at school. His interests widened and he began to carve animals and birds and this has occupied his life during the last 25 years. He researches all his commissions before beginning to carve, thus ensuring precise detail. He is now receiving orders from New York in addition to those regular patrons and galleries in England.
His work is carved to life size from either Jelutong or Basswood, both have a very fine grain which allow carving in minute detail.
