Max Oliver

Born in 1982 in Buckinghamshire, always sketched and painted as a child.

Left my dreams of being an artist to go to university to study geography at Royal Holloway University of London, but through out this experience the feeling of having to create and paint never left me. In 2004 I moved to Cornwall, this relocation re-ignited my passion for painting.

Largely self-taught my work focus on the rugged coastline and ever changing moors of south east Cornwall. The drama of the relationships between the sea, land, and sky are of great interest to me. I try to capture intimate moments that are otherwise missed, including colours, movement and textures, grand panoramic scenes as well as the subtle interactions of these environments. The paintings I create are the emotional response to magnificence I see in the coasts and moors of Cornwall.

I paint in oil because I like its versatility and can be applied thinly in
washes but also thickly. The intense and varying colours of the Cornish land and seascape can be accurately recreated in this medium. Although currently restricted mostly to working in-studio from reference material, I am looking to undertake more painting on site, outdoors to help capture more personal, unique moments, then use these studies as references back in the studio to created larger works.
